World Cinemas and Your Opinion

* Part 1 : THE problem lies here just bcse we people are watching hell lot of Hollywood or world movies.

There are millions of hollywood/french/chinese/brazilian/spanish/etc... movies in the world.

Step 1 :

We select few good movies that get made all over the world and watch them. There is list of top 250, top 100, oscar winning movies and so on, but what we do is select the best of them all and watch them.

Step 2 :

We reccomend these movies to few of our friends too. They too watch. 50% like them and 50 % doesnt like. The rest 50% who dont like the movie gives a reason that he/she cant understand the movie. So we explaian him what the movie is all about; he will watch it for the second time to relate our explanation. NOW HE/SHE likes the MOVIE.

Step 3 :

People start comparing the best of the selected few movies with the local movie made in Tamil/telugu/hindi/malayala/bengali. They feel like the movie isnt of world standards. They start giving quotes in relevance to the movies that they have watched. By now the guy is used to 100's of foreign made movies.

Step 4 :

Now he/she is too much involved in world movies that he starts comparing every indian made movie with a foreign language movie. He says the Directors here should learn from them on how to write screenplay or how to direct and even starts suggesting the kinda music that should be used. Some times even the camera angle.

Part 2 Step 5 :

Now he is completely against the movies that are MADE IN INDIA. He selects only a hand full of artist/technicians/directors/actors and name them as "The best". The mnovies made by them alone will be called as "classic". Rest all should be called as "peace of crap".

PS : Point to be noted here is .. by now he/she has turned into a complete movie analyst. Judging based on "THE BEST" movies ever made in world cinema... Here "Hey Ram" turns out to be the Classic and badsha turns out to be crap movie.. (sorry .. mee too a kamal fan ... but not a stupid)

Step 6 :

Now is the best part. He starts reviewing the movies and rates them (still comparing with THE BEST movies of the world. Now he starts remarking the directors/actors, asking them to change. (point to be noted here is 90 % of the reviewers doesnt know how a scene is taken also in a movie). He calls himself a critic and pin points only on the bad things in the movie. And forgets to Enjoy movie as a Movie and take up a movie as a "PROJECT".

Step 7 : (Has reasons)

Here he/she forgets the even in world movies there are millions of movies that have come and gone. Where has he/she has scene the best movies alone and the rest. So he/she should understand that CRAP movies are made all over the world. Where as we focus on only the best. Where ever the movie taken unless & until it satisfies the audience it wont be a hit.

Dont take a movie to your heart. If u like spread the "word of mouth" or just leave it to others and let them decide it whether a movie is good or not. Comparing THE BEST with THE WORST or THE AVERAGE movie doesnt do justice at all

The Prespective that world cinema offers

This is a response of sorts to what I think was an escapist view of the influence of World Cinema on Tamil Cinema. No Offenses meant. Figured a new piece would be convenient than responding in the 'comments' section.

Every year, tens of thousands of movies are made throughout the world with Hollywood, European and Asian Studios being major players in their own right. Indian movie studios churn out a substantial number of films. The average Tamil audience is quite passionate about movies and doesn't mind long queues and wait times for the tickets. The average Tamil movie "star" enjoys quite a passionate fan following and almost always has been keen on playing to this dedicated gallery. Hence, it is not uncommon for an average Tamil "star" movie to be protagonist centric and we see stars relying on their 'success formula' (read gimmicks, wardrobe et al) leading to a hangover of sorts of their previous works. However, Tamil Cinema has also seen its share of stalwarts (directors mostly and a few actors) who refused to get stuck to this formula vortex and strived to make sensible films.

Now, how does watching World Cinema influence the outlook on Tamil films and film makers? There are many dimensions to this. Watching a lot of great works from the world and reading about great filmmakers helps us in understanding "our" films and film makers better. For starters, one tends to appreciate finer details and allegory better.

In Tamil Cinema, a bunch of visionary film makers have made inspired cinema out of their passion for the works of great foreign film makers. Exposure to these foreign films helps you acknowledge these inspirations and makes you awe at the thought process of how one great work inspires another, instead of calling them as rip offs. Recently, I saw a film called "Tie Me Up Tie me Down" and I was just blown away at how one 10 min block in it served as a seed for "Guna". It gave me the impression that while watching this film, a stroke of lightning hit Kamal and Voila, Guna was born.

Now, what is the influence on our expectations? Personally, I think what I expect from an average Tamil movie has gone up with the refinement due to watching a lot of foreign works. Does it mean that I benchmark an average Tamil film with a similar genre foreign work and find the Tamil film bad? No, I don't think it works that way. What happens mostly is that you tend to have better clarity in your thoughtprocess and possibly get pissed or disinterested(when the movie is bad) with the way a movie unfolds. It doesn't mean that you get access to a 'flaw detection' meter and watch movies to make good use of your new acquaintance.

Movies are primarily made for entertaining us and I don't watch one with any other intention. Most recently I watched "GOA" and it didn't entertain me, not even a wee bit. I found it boring because of the 'lack of interesting situations' and 'humorless conversations'. I found it be dull and boring while I was thoroughly entertained by 'Hang Over' and say even 'Euro Trip'. May be while putting my thoughts about 'Goa' on paper I might say that Venkat Prabhu has to learn from the writers of Hangover/Euro Trip on how to make a good teen flick. That doesn't mean my expectation was driven by the experience I had while watching Euro Trip. Now, these are mindless teen flicks right? Why would one even have these in mind while watching another mindless entertainer, eh? Now, what has watching these foreign teen comedies possibly done to me is help me put on paper as to why Goa didn't work for me. In other words, you can say that there is nothing wrong with the theme of teen flicks as there have been interesting and engaging movies in that genre too. Thats the drift.

And reg the accusation that watching World Cinema makes a person biased to one breed of film makers in Tamil Cinema, I think this is just plain bollocks. If at all the exposure has done anything, it has created more awareness on what is what.

More than anything else, watching these great works makes you yearn for great works from your home. I don't think there is anything wrong in that and it is better than living in denial world.

Nadal says am busy

World number two Rafael Nadal has admitted the busy ATP schedule makes it difficult for the top players to achieve their targets.

Nadal had a relatively disappointing 2009 in which he lost the world number one ranking to Roger Federer and struggled to overcome a persistent knee injury.
Having helped Spain win the Davis Cup earlier this month, Nadal is now training for the new season which gets under way in the new year.

He told Spanish newspaper AS: "I have been training for some time. You could say I have not really stopped working because this year there was no possibility to stop.
"I'm happy with the work we are doing ahead of the new season."

Nadal, who will start his season in Abu Dhabi at an exhibition event before focusing on the defence of his Australian Open crown, admits the authorities need to look at reducing the workload on players.

He added: "The players and the ATP are working hard to try to establish more marked guidelines for players to have a little more flexibility and relaxation.

"Especially at the end of the year, no matter what happened to those who have played the final of the Davis Cup, you just do not have time to rest.

"We will succeed and if not for our generation, for those that follow. We have a schedule that forces you to play from the first week of January until December, making it very difficult to achieve your goals."

The world through my eyes

I have all the time in the world...and I have all the things in the world that I can learn......Known is a drop and unknown is the ocean.....it is so true in this life...and especially true...in the life of a software proffessional coz no matter whatever you could have studied (Bachelor of Engg) to become one, or all the learning you do while you are a s/w proffessional, is never enough. You would still feel that there is sooooo much more to learn...and various situations when I stand quiet..wondering...what is being talked around...only reinstates the fact that I need to know more.

Known is a drop ..unknown is an ocean.

Yet, All the world is my stage and I can play the role I choose to. Day b4 yesterday, b4 leaving for office...I had this high energy....was jumping and moving/dancing for some tune being played in computer and I was really happy and enthusiastic...and I kept on telling myself....I have got all the time in the world...to learn and finish off few pending tasks and be eager for more :-). And it felt good.

For no reason, during work, suddenly I felt all the enthusiasm drain out and only skepticism come in and confusion over few things regarding work only compounded those feelings. So much to my high energy and feelings :-D

Still, It's a beautiful life.

I have it all and can get only more in the times to come. :)...My family is really kewl..and nice..and good...with my relatives....and friends..who are really kewl...it sseems a bliss to be living..and this is how I live in :)

AND.....

There is this other world, where I face disappointment, anger, sadness, anguish...pain...and frustration almost on a regular basis. It is a straw in me....which kinda sucks away the life from me..however indifferent I chose to be. The disappointment over the helplessness on the situation or the lack of my action or the excess of which could result in worser results or the apprehension about the prospect that is awaiting me. There are various other things that Im not able to explain but one of those feeling is intent to blog about the same senses....to give a vent for them.

I believe most people in this world have these two worlds.....one world...in which there aint any big issues and the other world, which crops up once in a while to remind and drain most of our gains from the other world.

However, I still believe, its a beautiful world coz it has these two worlds within it....as a part of it and still chugs along...I dont have anything to lose, as I always carry the hope of fixing the other world to betterment :-)
