* Significant progress in critical institutional reforms that would set the pace for double-digit growth in the near future.

CHALLENGES

* Structural concerns on inflation management to be addressed by improving supply response of agriculture to the expanding domestic demand and through stronger fiscal consolidation.

* Implementation gaps, leakages from public programmes and the quality of outcomes pose a serious challenge.

* Rs3,000 crore to be provided to NABARD to provide support to handloom weaver co-operative societies which have become financially unviable due to non-repayment of debt by handloom weavers facing economic stress.

* Public sector banks to achieve a target of 15 per cent as outstanding loans to minority communities under priority sector lending at the earliest.

Housing Sector Finance

* Existing scheme of interest subvention of 1 per cent on housing loan further liberalised.

* Existing housing loan limit enhanced to Rs. 25 lakh for dwelling units under priority sector lending.

* Provision under Rural Housing Fund enhanced to Rs. 3,000 crore.

* To enhance credit worthiness of economically weaker sections and LIG households, a Mortgage Risk Guarantee Fund to be created under Rajiv Awas Yojana.

* Central Electronic Registry to prevent frauds involving multiple lending on the same immovable property to become operational by March 31, 2011.

Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission

* Financial Sector Legislative Reforms Commission set up to rewrite and streamline the financial sector laws, rules and regulations.

* Companies Bill to be introduced in the Lok Sabha during current session.

AGRICULTURE

* Removal of production and distribution bottlenecks for items like fruits and vegetables, milk, meat, poultry and fish to be the focus of attention this year.

* Allocation under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) increased from Rs. 6,755 crore to Rs. 7,860 crore.

Bringing Green Revolution to Eastern Region

* To improve rice based cropping system in this region, allocation of Rs. 400 crore has been made.

Integrated Development of 60,000 pulses villages in rainfed areas

* Allocation of Rs. 300 crore to promote 60,000 pulses villages in rainfed areas.

Promotion of Oil Palm

* Allocation of Rs. 300 crore to bring 60,000 hectares under oil palm plantations.

* Initiative to yield about 3 lakh Metric tonnes of palm oil annually in five years.

Initiative on Vegetable Clusters

* Allocation of Rs. 300 crore for implementation of vegetable initiative to provide quality vegetable at competitive prices.

Nutri-cereals

* Allocation of Rs. 300 crore to promote higher production of Bajra, Jowar, Ragi and other millets, which are highly nutritious and have several medicinal properties.

National Mission for Protein Supplement

* Allocation of Rs. 300 crore to promote animal based protein production through livestock development, dairy farming, piggery, goat rearing and fisheries.

Accelerated Fodder Development Programme

* Allocation of Rs. 300 crore for Accelerated Fodder Development Programme to benefit farmers in 25,000 villages.

National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture

* Government to promote organic farming methods, combining modern technology with traditional farming practices.

Agriculture Credit

* Credit flow for farmers raised from Rs. 3,75,000 crore to Rs. 4,75,000 crore in 2011-12.

* Interest subvention proposed to be enhanced from 2 per cent to 3 per cent for providing short-term crop loans to farmers who repay their crop loan on time.

* In view of enhanced target for flow of agriculture credit, capital base of NABARD to be strengthened by Rs. 3,000 crore in phased manner.

* Rs. 10,000 crore to be contributed to NABARD’s Short-term Rural Credit fund for 2011-12.

Mega Food Parks

* Approval being given to set up 15 more Mega Food Parks during 2011-12.

Storage Capacity and Cold Chains

* Augmentation of storage capacity through private entrepreneurs and warehousing corporations has been fast tracked.

* Capital investment in creation of modern storage capacity will be eligible for viability gap funding of the Finance Ministry.

Agriculture Produce Marketing Act

* In view of recent episode of inflation, need for State Governments to review and enforce a reformed Agriculture Produce Marketing Act.

Infrastructure and Industry

* Allocation of Rs. 2,14,000 crore for infrastructure in 2011-12. This is an increase of 23.3 per cent over 2010-11. This also amounts to 48.5 per cent of total plan allocation.

* Government to come up with a comprehensive policy for further developing PPP projects.

* IIFCL to achieve cummulative disbursement target of Rs. 20,000 crore by March 31, 2011 and Rs. 25,000 crore by March 31, 2012.

* Under take out financing scheme, seven projects sanctioned with debt of Rs. 1,500 crore. Another Rs. 5,000 crore will be sanctioned during 2011-12.

* To boost infrastructure development, tax free bonds of Rs. 30,000 crore proposed to be issued by Government undertakings during 2011-12.

National Manufacturing Policy

* Share of manufacturing in GDP expected to grow from about 16 per cent to 25 per cent over a period of 10 years. Government will come out with a manufacturing policy.

* Two Committees set up for greater transparency and accountability in procurement policy; and for allocation, pricing and utilisation of natural resources.

* Issues relating to reconciliation of environmental concern from various departmental activities including those related to infrastructure and mining to be considered by a Group of Ministers.

* National Mission for hybrid and electric vehicle to be launched.

* Financial Assistance to be made available for metro projects in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Chennai.

* Capital investment in fertiliser production proposed to be included as an infrastructure sub-sector.

Exports

* Of 23 suggestions made by Task Force on Transaction Cost, constituted by the Department of Commerce, 21 suggestions already implemented. Action to be taken on the remaining two suggestions. Transaction Cost of Rs. 2,100 crore will thus be mitigated.

* Self assessment to be introduced in Customs to modernize the Customs administration.

* Proposal to introduce scheme for refund of taxes paid on services used for export of goods.

* Mega Cluster Scheme to be extended for leather products. Seven mega leather clusters to be set up during 2011-12.

* Jodhpur to be included for the development of a handicraft mega cluster.

BLACK MONEY

* Five fold strategy to be put into operation to deal with the problem of generation and circulation of black money.

* Membership of various international fora engaged in anti money laundering, Financial integrity and Economic development, Exchange of information for tax purposes and transparency, secured.

Various Tax Information Exchange Agreements (TIEA) and Double Taxation

* Avoidance Agreements (DTAA) concluded. Foreign Tax Division of CBDT has been strengthened to effectively handle increase in tax information exchange and transfer pricing issues.

* Enforcement Directorate strengthened three fold to handle increased number of cases registered under amended Money Laundering Legislation.

* Finance Ministry has commissioned study on unaccounted income and wealth held within and outside the country.

* Comprehensive national policy to be announced in near future to strengthen controls over prevention of trafficking on narcotic drugs.

STRENGTHENING INCLUSION

* National Food Security Bill (NFSB) to be introduced in the Parliament during the course of this year.

* Allocation for social sector in 2011-12 (Rs. 1,60,887 crore) increased by 17 per cent over current year. It amounts to 36.4 per cent of total plan allocation.

Bharat Nirman

* Allocation for Bharat Nirman programme proposed to be increased by Rs10,000 crore from the current year to Rs. 58,000 crore in 2011-12.

* Plan to provide Rural Broadband Connectivity to all 2,50,000 Panchayats in the country in three years.

MGNREGA

* In pursuance of last years budget announcement to provide a real wage of Rs100 per day, the Government has decided to index the wage rates notified under the

* MGNREGA to the Consumer Price Index for Agricultural Labour. The enhanced wage rates have been notified by the Ministry of Rural Development on January 14, 2011.

* From 1st April, 2011, remuneration of Anganwadi workers increased from Rs1,500 per month to Rs. 3,000 per month and for Anganwadi helpers from Rs. 750 per month to Rs. 1,500 per month.

Scheduled Castes and Tribal Sub-plan

* Specific allocation earmarked towards Schedule Castes Sub-plan and Tribal Sub-plan in the Budget.

* Allocation for primitive Tribal groups increased from Rs. 185 crore in 2010-11 to Rs. 244 crore in 2011-12.

Education

* Allocation for education increased by 24 per cent over current year.

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan

* Rs. 21,000 crore allocated, which is 40 per cent higher than Budget for 2010-11.

* Pre-matric scholarship scheme to be introduced for needy SC/ST students studying in classes IX and X.

National Knowledge Network

* Connectivity to all 1,500 institutions of Higher Learning and Research through optical fiber backbone to be provided by March, 2012.

Innovations

* National Innovation Council set up to prepare road map for innovations in India.

* Special grant provided to various universities and academic institutions to recognise excellence.

Skill Development

* Additional Rs. 500 crore proposed to be provided for National Skill Development Fund during the next year.

* An international award with prize money of Rs. 1 crore being instituted for promoting values of universal brotherhood as part of National celebrations of 150th Birth Anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore.

Health

* Plan allocations for health stepped-up by 20 per cent.

* Scope of Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana to be expanded to widen the coverage.

Financial Inclusion

* Target of providing banking facilities to all 73,000 habitations having a population of over 2,000 to be completed during 2011-2012.

Unorganised sector

* Exit norms under co-contributory pension scheme “Swavalamban” to be relaxed.

* Benefit of Government contribution to be extended from three to five years for all subscribers who enroll during 2010-11 and 2011-12.

* Eligibility for pension under Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme for BPL beneficiaries reduced from 65 years of age to 60 years. Those above 80 years of age will get pension of Rs. 500 per month instead of Rs. 200 at present.

Environment and Climate Change

Forests

* Rs. 200 crore proposed to be allocated for Green India Mission from National Clean Energy Fund.

Environmental Management

* Rs. 200 crore proposed to be allocated for launching Environmental Remediation Programmes from National Clean Energy Fund.

Cleaning of Rivers and Lakes

* Special allocation of Rs. 200 crore proposed to be provided for clean-up of some more important lakes and rivers other than Ganga.

Some Other Initiatives

* To boost development in North Eastern Region and Special Category States, allocation for Special Assistance doubled.

* Rs. 8,000 crore provided in current year for development needs of Jammu and Kashmir.

* Allocation made in 2011-12 to meet the infrastructure needs for Ladakh (Rs. 100 crore) and Jammu region (Rs. 150 crore).

* Allocation under Backward Regions Grant Fund increased by over 35 per cent.

* Funds allocated under Integrated Action Plan (IAP) for addressing problems related to Left Wing extremism affected districts. 60 selected Tribal and backward districts provided with 100 per cent block grant of Rs. 25 crore and Rs. 30 crore per district during 2010-11 and 2011-12 respectively.

* A lump-sum ex-gratia compensation of Rs. 9 lakh for 100 per cent disability to be granted for personnel of Defence and Para Military forces discharged from service on medical ground on account of disability attributable to government service.

* Provision of Rs. 1,64,415 crore, including Rs. 69,199 crore for capital expenditure to be made for Defence Services in 2011-12.

* To build judicial infrastructure, plan provision for Department of Justice increased by three fold to Rs. 1,000 crore.

Census 2011

* To enumerate castes other than Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes in Census 2011, ‘caste’ to be canvassed as a separate time bound exercise.

UID Mission

* From 1st October, 2011 ten lakh Aadhaar numbers will be generated per day.

IT Initiatives

* Various IT initiatives taken for efficient tax administration. These include e-filing and e-payment of taxes, adoption of ‘Sevottam’ concept by CBEC and CBDT, web based facility for tax payers to track the resolution of refunds and credit for pre-paid taxes and augmentation of processing capacity.

* Under Mission mode projects, funds released to 31 projects received from States/ UTs for computerisation of Commercial taxes. This will allow States to align with roll out of GST.

* Bill to amend the Indian Stamp Act proposed to be introduced shortly.

* A new scheme with an outlay of Rs. 300 crore to be launched to provide assistance to States to modernise their stamp and registration administration and roll out e-stamping in all the districts in the next three years.

* A new simplified form ‘Sugam’ to be introduced to reduce the compliance burden of small tax payers falling within presumptive taxation.

* Three more benches of Settlement Commission to be set up to fast track the disposal of cases.

Corruption

* Group of Ministers constituted to consider measures for tackling corruption.

BUDGET ESTIMATES 2011-12

* Gross Tax receipts are estimated at Rs. 9,32,440 crore.

Direct Taxes

* Exemption limit for the general category of individual taxpayers enhanced from

* Exemption limit enhanced and qualifying age reduced for senior citizens.

* Higher exemption limit for Very Senior Citizens, who are 80 years or above.

* Current surcharge of 7.5 per cent on domestic companies proposed to be reduced to 5 per cent.

* Rate of Minimum Alternative Tax proposed to be increased from 18 per cent to 18.5 per cent of book profits.

* Tax incentives extended to attract foreign funds for financing of infrastructure.

* Additional deduction of Rs. 20,000 for investment in long-term infrastructure bonds proposed to be extended for one more year.

* Lower rate of 15 per cent tax on dividends received by an Indian company from its foreign subsidiary.

* Benefit of investment linked deduction extended to businesses engaged in the production of fertilisers.

* Investment linked deduction to businesses developing affordable housing.

* Weighted deduction on payments made to National Laboratories, Universities and Institutes of Technology to be enhanced to 200 per cent.

* System of collection of information from foreign tax jurisdictions to be strengthened.

* A net revenue loss of Rs. 11,500 crore estimated as a result of proposals.

Indirect Taxes

* To stay on course for transition to GST.

* Central Excise Duty to be maintained at standard rate of 10 per cent.

* Reduction in number of exemptions in Central Excise rate structure.

Service Tax

* Standard rate of Service Tax retained at 10 per cent, while seeking a closer fit between present regime and its GST successor.

* Hotel accommodation in excess of Rs. 1,000 per day and service provided by air conditioned restaurants that have license to serve liquor added as new services for levying Service Tax.

* Tax on all services provided by hospitals with 25 or more beds with facility of central air conditioning.

* Service Tax on air travel both domestic and international raised.

* Services provided by life insurance companies in the area of investment and some more legal services proposed to be brought into tax net.

* All individual and sole proprietor tax payers with a turn over upto Rs. 60 lakh freed from the formalities of audit.

* To encourage voluntary compliance the penal provision for Service Tax are being rationalised. Similar changes being carried out in Central Excise and Custom laws.

The latest buzz about Superstar Rajinikanth’s first animation film, which has now been reportedly renamed as ‘Rana’ (‘Sultan’ and ‘Hara’ were the earlier names), is that, it would have Trisha in an important role.

“The movie would have some scenes in which the real Rajini would appear. Trisha would share the screen space with the Superstar in those scenes, which would be directed by K S Ravikumar,” sources say.

Produced and directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth, the first of its kind movie already has Vijayalakshmi of ‘Chennai 28’ and ‘Anjathey’ fame as heroine. Music is by Oscar-Grammy winner A R Rahman.

Aadukalam does it all. The swashbuckling combo of Vetrimaaran & Dhanush are back together after their much acclaimed dark horse POLLATHAVAN to give us a gutsy, brilliant & realistic film in AADUKALAM.

Aadukalam is a simple story of Pride, Jealously & Ego woven brilliantly together in a realistic way by some brilliant performances. The film starts with a brief on Rooster fights & their emergence & history. And in a typically Vetrimaaran way, we go into a flashback where Pettaikaaran(Jayabalan) is a king of his trade in rooster fights. He is worshiped & helped by Karuppu(Dhanush), who does nothing but this for work and loves an Anglo Indian Irene(Tapsee) & financed by Dorai(Kishore). His foe Ratnasamy(Naren), a police officer whose family is into the tradition of rooster fights tries desperately to win a rooster fight against Pettaikaran but has never succeeded all these years. In one final attempt to win before his ageing mothers death and please her, he imports Bangalorean roosters during a fight which causes a flutter in the Pettaikaran camp. An altercation between Pettaikaaran & Karuppu leads Karuppu to field his Rooster in the ring against Pettaikaran's wish. This makes Pettaikaran angry and he goes to the point of announcing publicly through the mike that he dismembers Karuppu from his group. But, Karuppu's rooster wins the tournament and he becomes the talk of the town.

This incident creates envy & jealousy in Pettaikaaran who feels that he has been robbed of respect because of Karuppu's fluke victory and he cleverly plots the downfall of karuppu by being together with him. What happens when Karuppu comes to know of the betrayal? What happens to his love? forms the climax of the film.

Dhanush as Karuppu, has worked really hard to make his character believable and surely Aadukalam belongs to him. After Selvaraghavan, Dhanush clearly seems at ease with Vetrimaaran who has tapped his full potential in this role. This role is tailor made for Dhanush and is his forte and he comes out trumps. Jayabalan revels as Pettaikaaran. Kishore as Dorai is an added asset. Tapsee as Irene, has nothing much to do and she does not take much care in whatever she does in the film too. The character who comes as Dhanush's friend & Naren as Ratnasamy attains special mention.

The film is shot brilliantly with mood lighting to portray the rawness of Madurai. The comedy in the film is woven with the screenplay and is very engaging & entertaining. The songs are well places and are along with the flow of the film which is an added plus. GV Prakash Kumar has once again proved he belongs to the big league with the songs which are chart busters. But, the BGM of the film is plainly disappointing. The trumpet background score very much gives you a hangover of Pollathavan.

Every good thing does have its flaws, the movie is rollicking in the first half wit an edge of the seat rooster fight that is shot brilliantly. The second half drags towards the climax with some fights filmed in Vetrimaaranesque manner, but the film ends as it should, realistically!!!

Aadukalam is definitely worth your money just for the brilliant performances in the film. Kudos to Vetrimaaran for once again breaking away from clichés of Tamil Cinema and coming up with a fresh attempt at realistic cinema.

Kaavalan Film Review

Vijay is back to his vintage best in his latest flick “Kavalan” which has finally hit theatres after many hurdles. Movie is faithful to its original “The Bodyguard” which was a hit last year in Kerala directed by the same director , Siddique. This is the second one from the director-actor combo after the immensely successful “Friends”. Though they were not able to recreate the magic of the former , “Kavalan” is better than most recent few movies of Vijay.

“Kavalan ” is a reminiscence of those golden days of Vijay in the mid & late 90’s with many such romantic movies of his which made him the most popular up & coming hero of those days. Seeing Vijay trying to change his track of sorts is in itself quite refreshing for Tamil Cinema needs heroes of his stature & charisma to be around to bring in the variety . Hope that he is not pulled into the muddle of politics & lost forever to Cinema.
“Kavalan ” as a movie is not a path-breaking , artistic movie which can be classified as a classic. It has its share of downers like the patchy screenplay , poor editing with poor song placement , very average making , gimmickry in the form of stunts. Yet it is a refreshing simple romantic tale with the last 30 minutes of the movie having one of the best twists we have seen in the last few years.

First half has a meandering screenplay which is very wobbly & patchy with the comical duo of Vijay-Vadivelu providing the succour to the viewers in the otherwise below average half. The second half is where the movie’s screenplay picks up steam & tightens leading onto a good finale. Its been a long time since the days of “Kadhalukku Mariyadhai” or “Thullatha Manamum Thullum” that a Vijay movie has such a poetic ending.
Vijay is good as ever showcasing his all-round talents be it in emotional sequences or comedy . He has tried to underplay with certain sequences not in keeping with his mass hero image & its the way forward for him. He dances like a dream & agile in action sequences. His combination with Vadivelu is rip-roaring & they bring the roof down with their comedy.

Asin looks jaded & disinterested in the movie though she is as chirpy & ravishing as ever in the song sequences. Mithra as the other heroine is adequate.

Rajkiran’s character though bereft with confusion , his portrayal of the role is blemish-less. Roja , M.S.Baskar , Lingstone , Neepa , Bakru in the supporting cast don’t have much to do.

Vadivelu is good once again with his combination with Vijay after their immensely successful “Friends” , “Vaseegara” & “Sachein”.

Movie is technically not that great infact very average in that aspect. Ekambaram is the cinematographer & it is a far cry from some of his earlier works.

In Vidhyasagar’s music “Yaarathu” , “Pattampoochi” & “Sada sada” are delightful melodies while “Step Step Step it up” is a foot tapping number. It’s been a very long time since a Vijay movie without a “kuthu” number . Background score is patchy with good work in between largely average work.

On the whole , “Kavalan” is a perfect decent family entertainer sans any violence or gore or vulgarity. Coming in the background of string of box-office duds “Kavalan” may help Vijay salvage some pride in the B-O.

If you are a fan of vintage romantic Vijay of the yore , then “Kavalan” is your pick.

Bottomline : Vintage Vijay..

Siruthai Fim Review

Karthi seems to be having a dream run in Kollywood. He is like a batsman in in prime form smashing all deliveries to boundary. As long as you are not ready to complain that 'Siruithai' lacks logic, the film would work big time, as it is an out and out commercial fare.

Having started his career convincingly being part of off-beat movies like 'Paruthuiveeran' and 'Aayirathil Oruvan', the sibling of actor Suriya is right here at a groove proving that he too is not far behind his elder brother, tasting success doing mass masala ventures.

Adding to his list of entertainers is 'Siruthai'. Fast and furious from the word go, the movie comes with a sole purpose to provide entertainment and with no pretensions achieves the purpose.

As if not happy scoring a ton in his earlier ventures, Karthi goes to score a double hundred here. Yes, the actor manages to pull it off convincingly donning a dual role in the film for the first time - that of a callous local youth and a tough cop.

Though a remake of Telugu hit 'Vikramarkudu', director Siva has taken Karthi's abilities in his stride to make some suitable changes in the Tamil script, that helps the movie cross the chequered flag with much ease and gusto. Be it the dialogues, comedy, action or romance, 'Siruthai' manages to sustain all interest - it is like a pot where you put your hand everytime you get a fortune.

Rocket Raja (Karthi) is a small time thief who is talented enough to steal anything he comes across. In the company of Kaatupoochi (Santhanam), he enjoys life to its extent and even falls for the charm of a beautiful girl (Tamannah).

However, his life changes forever when a small girl comes to Raja calling him dad. As Raja finds out the girl's past, a flashback reveals that she is the daughter of an honest cop Rathanavel Pandian (Karthi), who is a nightmare to baddies.

However, Pandian is now is on the run because his enemies are behind him and his daughter. Eventually, the villains find the whereabouts of Pandian and finishes him off.

So steps in Rocket Raja (with the help of Pandian’s colleagues who are behind the girl reaching him) into his shoes and finishes the unfinished work of Pandian. He also takes care of his daughter. A roller-coaster ride of fun, joy, camaraderie and romance is what 'Siruthai' is eventually.

Karthi has not merely run through the motion but gives his heart and soul in the characters. Be it a fun-loving Rocket Raja or the angry policeman Rathnavel pandian, Karthi brings both astute on screen. He combines the Anbuselvan of 'Kakkha Kaakha' and the Sakthi of 'Pithamagan', made famous by his brother Suriya. At ease and at his self in dual roles, Karthi spells his charm all through.

Not far behind is Tamannah. The 'Paiyaa' duo of Tamannah and Karthi recreates the same chemistry on screen. Tammanah as bubbly innocent girl spells magic. A complex character made with ease by her. After a brief interval, she gets a role in which she really sparkles.

Add Santhanam for humour, and the end product is breezy and entertaining. As usual the comedian has audience in splits with his one-liners. He combines the grace of veteran Goundamani and presents them in his unique way, scaling success movie after movie. Mega Nair (of 'Thangam' fame) plays a woman police and has a bearing in the script.

Then there is Avinash, Rajiv Kanakala among others who do the job given to them with consummate ease Walking away with honours is Vidyasagar. The man of melody has come up with a cocktail of peppy and soft numbers, while Velraj's cinematography is the talking point of the movie. The action sequences featuring Karthi as cop is major plus for 'Siruthai'

Produced by Studio Green, 'Siruthai' is fit and fine for a good leap. With Karthi trying new vistas not missing out on the entertainment quotient, it is a obvious sweet pongal for masses this Pongal. Action and satisfaction is what 'Siruthai' is.

"Though I am not an avid reader I like romantic books.

"After meeting him (Nandy) I got very interested in poetry. Poems are a way of expressing your love. They are so beautiful," Katrina said.

As a prelude to the release of Endhiran on October 1, AGS cinemas has planned to screen seven movies of the Superstar starting from yesterday (24th September), as part of the film festival. The festival was inaugurated by Hansraj Saxena of Sun Pictures by screening the trailer of Endhiran.

The Endhiran Ratha Yathra began in Kanyakumari with the Rajini Mandra Makkal Podhunala Iyakkam President Murugesh flagging off the vehicles. Five vehicles form a part of this yathra. Rajinikanth recalled the first shot for Enhiran, which was filmed in Machu Pichu. The Superstar said that when Raju Sundaram gave him some very difficult dance movements he was skeptical about it and rehearsed until Aishwarya Rai came to the sets the next day.

Endhiran will be the first Indian movie in the past 10 years to be screened at the Colosseum, the most popular theatre in the world. This theatre, located in Oslo, Norway, is known for screening films like Matrix and Avatar.

A completely unusual intro song for Superstar Rajnikanth. A kind of a slow groovy start to the song with Rahman behind the mike crooning and is later joined by his daughter, Khatija, who debuts in singing. Once SPB hits the mike, the song hits fever pitch. Nostalgic memories flow of Rajni's memorable association with SPB in various blockbuster hit songs. Even at this age, SPB sings like an emperor who has complete control of himself. Rahman has the guts to experiment in a 'Rajni intro song' but his experiment here is a super success! People will still say Oruvan Oruvan was the best intro, but the class of this song is on a far different level

A techno kind of a track, that has the man himself, Rahman, singing it. A perfect track for the discotheques, the energy of the track is infectious. This could be a track that would not find favor with everybody in their initial listenings, but this is a highly infectious track that will keep you grooving and dancing as you keep listening to it more and more. Kash 'N Krissy seem to be a very good find (sung the 'Dochey' song in the Telugu movie Puli with music by Rahman).

Another peppy song, this one starts with tribal kind of beats. Javed Ali, the new regular in ARR's troupe predictably carries off the song in his own lively way. Chinmayi is the surprise here. Her voice is completely unrecognisable, and it rears up at only a few places near the end that its actually Chinmayi singing. But she is brilliant. Excellently voice modulated. A very entertaining track, the kind of track that 6 to 60 age group people will enjoy. Excellent random use of tabla by ARR in the song along with the drum beats. He is the experimentor's delight. A sure superhit track, the visuals (Shankar should ace it as per prediction) should take this track to great heights.

A Bollywood kind of romantic melody track that finds a place in Endhiran. Surprising since its a Rajni film, but the track rocks! Vijay Prakash, who has rapidly grown in stature in the Tamil music scene with songs like 'Hosanaa' and 'Veera Veera' (both Rahman tracks) is in top form with this song. And joining him is the queen of current Indian female playback singing, Shreya Goshal. Both singers complement each other really well and lift the song very well. A Rahman vintage track, the beats and the instrumentation are in perfect sync and are really attractive to hear. A feel good track, one that can be played on a romantic evening.

Looks like some kind a theme track. Reminds one of the 'Liquid Dance' track from Slumdog Millionaire. Excellent beats and guitar really rock this song. The pace of the song fluctuates wildly but the music at each pace is so good to listen that you completely do not mind it. If used as a theme song, this track will enhance the movie like no other. One of the best theme tracks (if it is one).

There have been a lot of guesses regarding Ajith’s 50th movie and the guessing game is still on. First there was news of the film being dropped and then there was something allegedly said by the director Gautham Menon. With all kinds of news floating around our sources say the movie is on and Gautham will start it once Ajith completes his racing commitments. Happy to say that the whole Endhiran shoot is wrapped on 7th July with the shooting of the song sung by AR Rahman, choreographed by Remo at Sun Studios. It was a very very happy moment for everyone. I think this is the first film where I am doing the pumpkin breaking pooja (poosanika udaikiradhu) with the lead stars Rajnikanth & Aishwarya Rai.
Everyone had this feeling similar to a cricket last over…. like a 2 year college wrapping day where you feel very happy & also with a heavy heart … I am amused when I see the same feelings in everyone….
Our producer Mr. Kalanithi Maran gave a big party on July 9th for the crew. In the presence of our honorable Central minister Mr. Dayanidhi Maran, I attended the party along with Rajni sir, DOP Rathnavelu, Resul Pookutty, Editor Antony & my crew. We shared all the interesting stories related to the making of the film with Mr. Maran. It was a memorable day for all of us….
A good news… Yesterday morning Rahman gave the tamil songs final mix master to us… it is amazing…rocking, sounding as big & grand as the budget of the movie. Regarding marketing,for any big budget movie promotion will be made for 2 months before the release. I m just saying here for example(for raavanan promotion was made for only one month but we could witness a great response on the release day)then just imagine for the status of superstar,2 months promotion will raise the curiosity of people to sky high…shankar’s previous movies anniyan,sivaji etc., also had hardly two months promotion but they were able to record great openings…

I am having much confidence on shankar’s final product also but inspite of all these one thing that irks me is the involvement of sun pictures,they r not having business ethics at all.even before they advertised for the new stills of endhiran like anything and at the last there were only 3-4 stills which made fans to disappoint upto some extent.

Also both shankar movies and superstar movies will be in the talk from day of announcement to the day of release but that is not the case happening with endhiran,this is mainly because all the daily’s and weekly’s will carry news on their movies(although many r fake) on regular basis which made people to closely to follow it. I was able to see daily thanthi carrying some news abt sivaji at least once per week and all weekly’s also carried numerous coverstories which kept the movie alive but with sun pictures involving in it, no one is ready to carry news like that.

but bringing excitement back is not a big deal, A high profile audio launch will do that. Although shankar is a king in marketing, i fear whether he can do it with sun pictures. Sun pictures may also do overdose marketing which may backfire . So after fixing the date of movie release, they should start the promotion before 2 months starting with a high profile audio launch,release of stills on a weekly basis and 2-3 teasers and a trailor and with rahman’s songs turning into chartbusters and more importantly sun pics shouldn’t annoy people,then everything will fall on the right place. Let’s see what is going to happen?

The shoot of the last song of Sun Pictures big budget, Shankar directed Endhiran (Robot) is over. It was shot at the state-of- the- art Sun Studios at Perungudi in Chennai.

Though i have been saying Endhiran audio is likely to be released anytime on or after Aug 15 to leave a reasonable gap of about 8 to 10 weeks between audio launch and movie’s release, of late news is spreading that July 31st is the audio launch date. Now that SundarJi has also posted the news, it has got to be the correct news.

Some news are also saying the audio launch is to be held in Malaysia but some other version I heard says it will be held in Chennai only. So far, SunPics, the producers of Endhiran, have not officially announced anything – either the date or the venue of the launch.

However, now I tend to believe that Endhiran audio will be released on 31st July and also the launch function will most likely be held in Chennai. You know how? Nadigar Sangam Secretary Radha Ravi was questioned recently on what action the Sangam would take on Asin, who had traveled to Sri Lanka, to participate in the Hindi film shooting Ready. It is worth mentioning here that the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce and several other associations of the Tamil film industry have issued a warning to all the Tamil stars not to visit Sri Lanka for shooting purposes. They also made it clear that the Tamil film industry would not cooperate with their Sri Lankan counterparts.

Then news about Asin flying down to Sri Lanka to take part in the shooting of Salman Khan-starrer Ready started making rounds, there was a lot of opposition. The actress, on the other hand, stated that it was not her preference but she had to go with the crew of the film.

Katrina Misses Raajnethi Success party

Katrina Kaif's plans to fly down to Mumbai for a day in order to celebrate the success of Raajneeti, on June 23, from Spain, where she is shooting for Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara, have been dropped.

Apparently the inclement weather has made it impossible for her to be let off for even a day. Setting aside her habitual 'work-first-party-later' attitude she had even requested the film’s producers and director to accommodate her absence.

Says a source close to Katrina, “Since Prakash Jha was very very keen to have her down to Mumbai for the bash, and had even made all arrangements for her flight, Katrina was not willing to give up the idea of attending the function. She offered to be back in less than 24 hours. Katrina was willing to fly to Mumbai, attend the Raajneeti bash on Wednesday and fly out quickly the same night to re-join the Dobara team the next morning. But she has not been allowed to do so.”

The Raajneeti team has a lot to celebrate about. But Prakash Jha wanted no celebration until his lucky mascot Katrina Kaif was available. Unfortunately, Zoya Akhtar’s crew has been facing rough weather ever since they arrived in Spain. Apparently 6 days of shooting had to be cancelled because of heavy rains. And now they need to make up for the lost time quickly since their work permits and visas would expire.

Prakash Jha admits that Katrina would be unable to make it to the Raajneeti celebration party on June 23. “They’ve lost a lot of time because of the rain in Spain. I couldn’t dream of having a Raajneeti bash without Katrina. I had postponed it until her availability. But now it’s impossible for Katrina to fly down.”

Prakash will now record a video message with Katrina and play it at the party. “So she will be with us in spirit if not in person,” he smirks.

Katrina, on the other hand, tried to sound diplomatic and non-disappointed. “It is a big day. And the success of Raajneeti is very precious to me. But I can’t leave the crew in Spain.”

She admits there have been lots of unscheduled breaks. Katrina has one of her sisters, Melissa, to join her in Spain and give her company during the breaks. Says Katrina, “London is just two hours away, so Melissa could join me. Mumbai is in another hemisphere. Flying down is impossible. Please tell Prakashji, Mera party baki raha.”

Priyamani, who is set to star in director-screenwriter-producer Ram Gopal Varma’s Hindi-Telugu-Tamil film, Rakta Charitra, admits that she was uncertain and afraid of working for the film in the initial stages.

After enjoying the modern day Mahabharata two weeks ago, its time for modern day Ramayana and the person who is directing this modern day epic is none other than the Master story-teller Mani Ratnam. Does the ace director show who the real guru is? Well, he almost has.

The story-line is simple, Beera (read Raavan)

abducts Ragini (read Sita) wife of Superintendent of Police Dev (read Ram), to avenge the death of his sister Serena (read Shurpanaka). But Beera instead of killing Ragini falls in love with her. The dense forest looks a mission impossible for Dev if not for an over enthusiastic and bubbly forest officer Sanjeevani (read Hanuman). And while Beera is getting attracted to Ragini more and more Dev is getting closer to Beera. Ragini's love for Dev never changes but she also feels sorry for Beera. Will Dev be able to rescue Ragini? Will Raavan avenge the death of his sister? Well, you do know the story don't you? Or do you want to guess?

Taking the story-line from the mythology is not new for Mani and he has come up with quite a beautiful way of presenting it. But where he falters is in the pacing of the script. Can the movie be any different if it was not a non-linear screenplay? Will it be any different if the climax was compelling (not that it was bad), if Mani hasn't taken so many logical liberties? Well, it could have surely made the experience better. The movie starts off fine but the pace drops considerably and until interval the movie goes in a more sluggish manner. Added to that the unnecessary slow motions. The second half picks up pace but the climax might get mixed reactions from the audience. The reason for that is, we don’t know who is right and who is wrong. Is Dev the bad guy? Yes, according to the movie he might have been, but morally he is right. The movie lacked chemistry between Vikram and Aishwarya Rai, their relationship demanded more screen time for the audience to feel the connect. Our heart never went out to Vikram and that might have been the reason the movie doesn't completely pull it off. But there are several brilliant scenes in the movie which does make a trip to the theatres necessary.

Abhishek Bachchan as Beera was good but not great, he lacked the toughness he showed in Yuva. But overall he did manage to carry the movie forward in his able shoulders and his hard work for the role did show. Aishwarya Rai as Ragini was looking gorgeous and acts like a pro. It’s a shame that only a few directors are able to get the actor out of her. Vikram as Dev, looks a tad overweight but as always reliable with his emoting. Govinda as Sanjeevani is good but if only he had smarter and wittier one-liners, the effect would have quadrupled. Priyamani was sensational in a cameo. Nikhil Dwivedi is competent enough for the role of Dev's side-kick (supposedly Lakshman). Ravi Kissan is a revelation as Beera's brother.

Technically Raavan stands out; every frame in the movie is picture perfect. Manikandan and Santosh Sivan have out done themselves. The camera goes in the most unlikely places to make the experience spellbinding. Editing by Sreekar Prasad is good but could have worked more in the first half. Music & Background by Rahman is a treat. Its awesomeness taking the form of chords. Action sequence choreographed by Shyam Kaushal and Peter Hein is mind-blowing but just because they are in the crew sending almost all the characters off the cliff is a little bit over done. Dialogues are well written but nothing sensational about it to quote.

Overall, Raavan is a visual spectacle, a modern day Broadway musical of Ramayana which might get mixed reviews from the audience but take this in, it’s in no means a bad movie. We expect greatness from Mani Ratnam, and maybe the expectation is at fault. But don't miss this in the theatres, for its visual poetry by Santosh Sivan and Manikandan.

I have no words to explain what i have been through for the past 2.5 hours. I was in totally another world. A world that only a master crafter Mani Ratnam can create. Raavanan is an experience like no other.

Right from the first frame of the film you know you are in for a visual treat. Mani does not waste any time in taking you to the heart of the story.

SPOILER ALERT A Kidnap, a search and moments later you are following Veera aka Veeraiya(Vikram)and his group into the thick dense forests. Veera, a rebel kidnaps Ragini(Aishwarya Rai Bachchan)to take revenge over Dev(Prithviraj). A rock and roll ride into the forest sees us following the lives of Veera & his mates and why they seek revenge. Lives are lost on both sides. Who wins? The Rebel Veera or Dev forms the crux of the story. The story is inspired from Ramayana and Mani has made sure he has added his own flavor and twists to suit the audiences. Special sequences that deserve praise: The bridge fight, the climax, Vikram's dialogues.

Mani could not have found a better person to portray Veera. Vikram sparkles a Veera. Portraying terror , we instantly connect to the madness of the ten heads. Be it the body language, the dialogue delivery, the romance Vikram just nails it with his eyes. They are so expressive that you are drawn to it and he never lets you even wince with his performance. Take a bow, Vikram for the National Award has already found its WINNER! He makes the movie entirely his own.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Ragini has ample scope and has worked hard for this movie physically. She has done a neat job of her role and is the second most important character of the movie. A thumbs up for Ash.

Prithviraj Sukumaran as Dev, the fearless cop who will go any limit to take out the rebel. He is hunky, handsome and has done a very good job. Th only flaw was he looked very much younger than Ash which deterred their chemistry.

Karthik (Gnanaprakasam) after a long hiatus is back with a decent role and he gives us an amazing performance. He infuses comic sense into the film and makes us have a hearty laugh here and there.

Prabhu, Munna as Veera's brothers have done a decent job.

Priyamani, although she has a screen presence of about 15 mins connects with the audience and takes away the accolades.

Watch out for Vaiyapuri as a eunuch & Jon Vijay as the police officer.

Although it is totally an out and out Vikram film, the main hero of the film is the cinematographer Santosh Sivan. Hats off to the man for giving us the breathtaking visuals.(watch out for a dragonfly closeup shot)

And how can i miss Oscar champ AR Rahman, who has breathed life into the visuals. Awesome songs, amazing BGM's and a final song "NAAN VAARUVEN" which has been haunting me ever since i have heard it today. Effing Brilliant!

With Raavanan Mani transports you to his world, a world where mediocre is not used as an excuse. A world where a good film is made into a great one.

.John Abraham and Deepika Padukone have been signed up to play the lead roles in the Hindi remake of the Tamil film Milaga. The Tamil version had cameraman Natraj donning the lead role along with Poongodi and he will wield the camera for the Hindi film.

If there is one person who is more worried about Sura's poor performance in the box office than anyone else, it could apparently be Tamannah, the heroine of Vijay's 50th film.

For the petite actress, who had been part of super hits for the past couple of years ('Ayan', 'Padikadhavan', 'Kanden Kadhalai', 'Paiyaa' etc), tasted failure for the first time thanks to the movie's dismal show.

"I expected ‘Sura’ to do well. But now I understand it's very difficult to judge a film while it's being made. Ultimately, everything depends on audience acceptance," she says.

However, putting aside the film's failure, Tamannah is now looking forward for positive things to happen. "I am eagerly expecting the release of ‘Jayam’ Ravi starrer ‘Thillalangadi’ which I expect to become a blockbuster. Because, it is already a huge hit in Telugu."

Namitha Wants To Act In Good Roles

Decade old love story, Awful climax, beautiful camera, good narration, soothing music, Okish Chase sequences, Well pictured love sequences(the on screen chemistry between the lead pair was good enough)...So mixed responses. The final verdict, is the movie worth it ?

YES is my answer(having said that i dint have any premeditated thought or expectations on the movie).

Few brilliant scenes are good enough to make a moderate movie feel good. Even the awful climax had an interesting thing just before end.

I have seen it in many movies(including the latest tamil movie Goa), but conversation between two lovers who had no common language to express their love to each other made the sequences interesting. Mein ullo ke patti hoon and wetting the pants(Mexican dialogue) conversations were good. Its really good to see when we understand what they both say to each other, when they dont understand each other's words...

The first half is racy, and the second half which is supposed to be more racy was dragging a bit. I was afraid if there is going to be cliches of our cinema like friend or well wisher betraying the lead pair. But thankfully no such thing happened till the end.

Narration was so good. It was keeping the suspense element(both in flashback and main course of the movie). Music was good(Zingagi to pal ki is the only song i cud remember though). Leaving the songs, I had a feeling like its not just a bollywood movie and had NEAR hollywood standards. The background music and Camera were surely adorable.

Chasing scene should have been made more racy and logical. No matter what, the movie was engaging and atleast a visual treat for me...

I give 3/5, 1 each for narration, music and cinematography...

The Association of South Indian Movies has barred the Suriya – Priyamani starrer Raktha Charitra from being screened in 5 southern states. This move is taken as an action against Vivek Oberoi who attended the IIFA event held in Colombo. Earlier, the body has announced that action will be taken against the actors who participate in the IIFA event held in Colombo.

The Hrithik starrer Kites is also taken off the movie halls following this since Hrithik also attended the IIFA. “We have decided to take action against actors who attended the IIFA and since Vivek plays an important role in Rakthacharithra the movie will not be allowed to screen in southern states. We cannot relax the rule for Suriya and Priyamani,” an official from the Association was quoted as saying.

Vijay Fan's Message to The Biased Media

The fourth estate called Media is a powerful tool in a democratic country. We respect their power to either construct or destruct with the power of their words. But are they doing justice to the articles they write? Definitely not always. Especially almost never when it comes to what they write about Vijay. Those who are their eye candies get hailed every other day and if they are biased about someone, we are sure to see double standards in their articles on them. The hatred or bias which media has been showing oflate towards Vijay is really shocking and this article poses a few questions to them on this:

1. Many websites wrote that Vijay will be banned following the recent uproar about Sura from few theatre owners. Anyone with commonsense knows banning an actor directly lies within powers of NAdigar Sangam or Producers council and not Theatre owners who are empowered to issue red cards to an actor’s films and not bans. This itself is a clear example of their attitude towards Vijay and what they really expect to happen. We wonder if they can write with same cruelty about any other hero in similar situation.

2.Every now and then we see articles criticising Vijay to the lowest levels of even abusing published in websites and few magazines using unparliamentary language. Aren’t journalists required to have some amount of professional ethics and maintain some levels of discipline when writing about celebrities?

3.Every Vijay movie is degraded with the tagline of “Only for Vijay fans” or by giving the lowest possible star rating with all negatives highlighted. Similar type of films from their eye candy actors or those who are influential will come with a totally different tone from same reviewers, and the star rating would be unbelievably high, not worthy of its value. And the review will definitely have a line which says all negatives are overcome by the performance of so and so actor. They can instead term themselves as fan sites of particular actors which would be more justified on their part.

4. When Sun Pictures, the distributors of Vettaikaaran themselves declared it as their biggest collection grosser, these media still try to project it as a flop. When Vijay movies that have been super hits were termed as just average, average movies are termed as flops and washouts by these media. Why cant they maintain the same scale of box office analysis for their eye candy actors or influential actors?

5. Oflate, there has been a new trend to write letters and requisitions for Vijay claiming it as from the point of view of a fan which are nothing but injecting negatives in the form of sugar coated words when his movies are not received well. Why can’t there be articles from the same fans’ point of view when Vijay delivers superhits, and that time, we can see only “average” and “nothing new” kind of reports which has no meaning when most fans like a film.

6. Why can the media offer free advice for actors who claim themselves as family entertainers yet act in bedroom and exposing scenes, actors who does one movie every two years and yet everytime comeup with similar story of one song millionaire concepts and many others who commit blunders in the name of movis which neither benefits fans nor the people in business? Why do they have to turn their fake attention to Vijay when he has already planned for the change wanted from him?

7. As for Vijay, we have to notice the first and foremost thing that he has avoided any protest that’s against Media in the past as he feels a gratitude that they are ones who strengthed his position to what he is today. Other actors who attend these protests and speak abusive things on the press and media just because they were handed over the mic, as still treated as favourites by media.

8. Vijay is always an easily approachable media friendly hero who has readily agreed for many interviews to even those magazines in the past even when he was hurt by their comments on him and his films. A recent example is his interview to Kumudham inspite of their worst review for Vettaikaaran.

9. If Vijay doing commercial movies is a sin as projected by media, why can’t they offer some guidance to actors who have been acting in similar kind of stories for past 18 odd years or those who miserably fail to deliver bankable movies in a consistent manner and doesnt even speak openly to media?

10. The festival editions, special editions of magazines will feature an interview of Vijay. They put up series about him to boost up ther sales. Yet when it comes to writing about him, it is in the most inhuman way which readily buildsup a negative impression in the minds of the readers. And even when their articles are least related to Vijay they use his face on posters to draw attention. Is Vijay a commodity to boost up their sales and then thrown away when they don’t need him?

This article is not intended to ask media to support or come up with articles that always shower praises on Vijay. We want to condemn their worst attitude towards Vijay and being unmindful of the fan power he has. Its high time they stop spreading rumors and publish wrtings degrading him and his films. They should try to do justice to their profesion in whatever they do. Least, they need to posses some humanitarian traits and give respect for everyone’s feelings.

Vijay Fan's Message to Cunning Theatre Owners

The recent reaction of theatre owners after the relese of Sura is one of the worst happenings in recent past. Time and situation changes everyone, but really not to this extent. The same theatres owners who once hailed Vijay as a Messiah to them, have all of sudden been projecting him as someone who has ruined their lives with unreal claims, that even God cannot approve.

What realy hurts is their speeches as if he hasn’t given any profit to them. Vijay is the one who always wishes that everyone from parking boy to theatre owners to distributors and his producers earn profits from his films. And he managed to achive it number of times which even earned him the Minimum Guarantee hero status.

1.If 5 Vijay movies continously failed as per your claims, on what gut feeling you invested 50 lakhs in his 6th consecutive movie? This seriously lacks any logic. A Good business mind won’t commit same mistake for 6 times in a row. They still look at cashing upon his opening power and fans excitement to see collections for first few days. If they say its the trust they had on Vijay it is an escape statement to hide the real source of their losses and shift the blame on Vijay.

2.The 50 lakh MG concept would apply only for theatres in major cities like Chennai, Madurai, Kovai, Trichy, Salem and Nellai. Has the movie been sold for same amount to theatres located in places like Karur, Pollachi, Pazhani etc etc and the other rural areas of TN? We guess the rate is only according to area and projecting it as a TamilNadu wise problem is again a media stunt.

3.What was the Ticket rates for first 2 weeks? Is any theatre following rules implemented by Govt of Tamil nadu? People who saw the movie on 20th day paid a Ticket price of min 100. The first 5 days Ticket prices were 150,200 in many places whereas according to Govt norms it should be 50,75 even for an AC theatre. Few theatres outside Chennai has A/C only in its name. With ticket prices min of 100 till 20th day and reasonable crowd flow as confirmed by those who visit theatres, how could a owner face loss?

4. Just a Small calculation. Lets take a Theatre capacity of around 1000. And a Vijay movie for first 10 days will have minimum 80% Crowd on an average. With theatre ticket prices at a min of 100 and Daily 4 shows, movie sold for 50lakhs. Let keep per Show 800 seats gets filled. Per day 3200 seats(Includes all 4 shows). For 10 days, 10*3200 seats= 32,000*100 ticket cost= 32,00,000.With having 60% average occupancy for next 10 days, with same calculation a theatre would get 24 lakhs back.This itself amounts to 56 lakhs returns roughly with minimum assumed values.Then where comes the claim of money? It looks more like an intentional act to degrade Vijay’s fame in Industry.

5. There is also a point mentioned by theatre owners that Kamal,Rajini,Manirathnam and T.R. compensated them. Let us know one thing.Did Kamal compensate for Alavadhan or Anbe Sivam loss? He did only for Mumbai express which was his own Production. Did Rajini compensate for Kuslean loss? He did only for Baba which was his Own production. Its ages since Maniratnam or TR worked in a project for another producer.So its clear that everyone had compensated only for their own Production. If Vijay has been asked compensation for Aathi its fair. Claiming loss for other movies which wasn’t his own Production is heights of stupidity. If they are really failures, why would someone be willing to invest 50 lakhs on Sura after 5 failures?

6. Even after Sun pics themselves said Vettaikaran is their highest grosser, how can these people call that as a flop? If Vijay movies are been called continuous Failures, then what about most of the heroes who give a hit once in a blue moon and still rated as top heroes on par with Vijay? And calling al movies after Aathi as flops, which includes Pokiri is he most ridiculous thing ever heard recently. And their most unrealistic claim that Sun Pictures cannot be responsible for this highlights their only motive behind all these. How can a distributr selling at a high price cannot be responsible for their loss?!

Singam Film Review

Spoiler-alert !!!

Lets get the governing dynamics clear - Saamy + Vettaikkaran = Singam --> Equation 1

If all the Vijay films are turning out to be colossal disasters under the pretext of "No novelty in the storyline and performances", then why pick Vettaikkaran in the above equation ?. Because, it is the most recent Sun Pictures - Vijay combo, I watched on screens.

One can actually enter a bet to find six differences between "Vettaikkaran" and "Singam" - and can come up with points like, Aspiring police officer - Established police officer, the anti-social activity committed by the villains of the scripts etc. Anushka and Sun Pictures will contribute to the similarities list.

Well, the substantiation for Equation 1 needs to be presented. Now, have a look at the following template (for the first half of the movie only) and just match with how many ever movies you want. Saamy, Arul, Vettaikaran, Singam are some notorious titles which will readily sit-into it with some minor tweaks.

Villain's introduction - during and before title cards

Hero's introduction - Fight and opening song compulsory

Comedian's introduction (Association of the comedian with either the hero or the heroine)

Hero catches a sight of the above (Trembling shoulders and boiling blood, he is not involving himself into the mess and stays away as he is not directly impacted by the "The villain is a bad guy - Instance 2" )

Villain's younger brother commits a heinous crime (related to his innate womaniser instinct or some acts of rowdism)

The hero unknowingly bumps into the Villain's brother and thrashes him (and 20-odd "office room boys") aside.

Heroine, fortunately gets a glimpse of the above - fall in love

Duet 1 in foreign locales.

Hero - villain main encounter - No punch dialogues here. The hero shows his intentions to shy-away from the mess but the villain is not letting him to do so.

Comedy Scene 3

Romance followed by Duet 2

Hero-Villain Head-on collision followed by the challenge - Punch dialogue guaranteed.

Freeze the frame as the hero concluded the punch - Spin the letters of I-N-T-E-R-M-I-S-S-I-O-N and deposit it on screen.

Hari - what more can be expected of the Master-Masala-Maker who invariably - will pick up a town/city, have a powerful villain dictating the story, eyecandy heroine reserved for the duets and a mean "meanwhile" style screenplay interspersed with comedy pieces. Hari has started maintaining a police-template also, I believe and "Singam" is the latest output of the template. Dialogues - "I ll make you run out of Tamilnadu", "Chivalry, courage, intelligence of the Tamilnadu Police" - Yappa !!! Enough of it man ... starting from Sethupathi IPS, many police officers have uttered these stuff out.

What is this "meanwhile" stuff, anyways ? - Pick the first 40 minutes of any masala movie - the hero, villain, heroine and comedian will be doing things on their own with zero correlation coefficient. The villain is doing some anti-social activity - "meanwhile" the heroine is playing around merrily in her home - "meanwhile" the hero is doing some good deed to the society - "meanwhile" the buffoon is doing something somewhere. Scenes follow one by one, like the above ... Don't dare to call this "screenplay" ever. Kamal Haasan, who has been conducting screenplay workshops should do one for these guys and inculcate some sense of screen writing in them.

When the first half was shot, well in lines with the above template, "Saamy" came to the rescue in the second half, in terms of screenplay. The hero - Romancing while in duty at check-posts, leading the ruffians to a lonely place to clobber them, losing some of his kins in the last 20 minutes, smartly follows the villain as he escapes to Andhra, delivers the final monologue message to the villain - are you not reminded of "Saamy" ?.

Surya - His 25th film this is. While I am very much happy with his resume thus far (starting out as a shy-ridden, seemingly resourceless and a naive youngster, whose only credential then was that - he was the son of the veteran actor Sivakumar), I am not full-of-praise for his 25th film. But, there were enough films in his kitty which will speak of his value as a performer to the present day tamil cinema. With his penchant for performances and an undeniable panache, Surya seems to be the only actor whom you can bank upon in look for good cinema. Way to go Surya and if he is inclined more to be a "hero" like his contemporaries (like in "Singam"), he is disappointing many in our camp.

Coming to Surya's performance in "Singam" - He just exhibits an animated, arrogant, powerful, adrenalin-ridden police officer, pulverising the jumbo-looking "office room boys" (like "Vettaikkaran" Vijay) in a few strokes. While speaking to his adversaries, Surya stands with his legs-apart ("stable equilibrium", probably) and shouts-aloud the dialogues (a bit irritating and monotonous mannerism, it becomes). He is soft-spoken only to Anushka and his family-people. There's a remarkable improvement in his dancing abilities as well, no doubts. The fight sequences should be loads-of-work for the film editor - so many shots - Juggernaut-like Surya thrashing the baddies, exploding tata-sumos, flying rowdies, slashing glass pieces - so much to cover and add to that a racy speed with which the sequence is enacted.

Though one can be easily critical of Surya's performance in the movie, owing only to the monotone of a masala movie, you can only admire his crackerly-attitude in whatever he does on screen. His body language evokes an unconditional strictness (of a police officer) through-out and his fit 'n' trim physique add a special punch for the role, he enacts. Now, on a comparative note, there is a substantial difference in the character displayed by Anbuchelvan (Kaakha Kaakha) and Durai Singam (Singam). The former sounds more driven by intuitions & smartness and the latter by emotions & raw physical abilities (yeah, there is a lot of cognitive smartness as a police officer, exhibited by Durai Singam also). Anbuchelvan is a calm-n-composed urbane police officer whereas Durai Singam articulates pages of punches in high pitches. Gautham Menon and Hari !!!

Anushka Shetty - Has she got some meat in the script to chew upon ?

She is reserved for songs, precisely. Especially, in the second half, where the hero's itinerary is really filled up with appointments-with-villains, Anushka should have tried keeping herself busy with her dance master and the wardrobe-expert for the upcoming duet sequences (Hari has already sent her lines in several SMSes). Her cleavage-friendly attires in the songs successfully received many a "oohs" and claps from the audience. And yeah, she is tall and gorgeous.

And, I wanted to mention this - There's this atrocious sequence which would lead Surya (Durai Sngam) to nick-name the heroine "Puli" in line with "Singam", which Hari also uses to get them introduced to each other - absolute lack of creativity, I felt.

Prakash Raj - looks aged - made up for the role, probably. Nothing special here - he has tossed up tons of performances like this, on us. For the umpteenth time, he is the Big Dada of the city with the police and politicians under his belt - owns many Tata sumos and elephantine "office room" boys. Loses out finally to Durai Singam, the untouchable tough cop.

Support Cast - It looks like, there has been an ordinance in effect at the Tamilnadu Film Artistes Association that atleast two from the following set {Vijaya Kumar, Radha Ravi, Manorama, Nizhalgal Ravi, Nasser}, should be a part of the support cast in any big budget production. Hari, so graciously includes the entire band here. No offence meant on the extremely talented artistes above, but we have got so much used to these guys' body language, dialogue delivery and mode of emotions that nothing new is in store for us. Support cast, on the other hand, is only horribly typecasted, thus trashing the real "potential" in these wonderful actors. They, like countless other occasions, deliver a cliched but balanced performance. we should feel sorry for talented thespians like Nasser, Girish Karnad who were always picked for petty malefactor roles. On a welcome note, our cinema these days, is actually getting progressive in sorting out the support artistes from the "society".

Vivek - should consult a good doctor - His "Mokkais" are turning pathetic. The concept of "Sirippu Police" has been tested by time but the comedy track just sucks here. Same old "Injury between legs" man !! ... When Murali and Vadivelu pole-vaulted and Vadivelu hurt his "%^&*" (for the first time, I believe), it was moderately funny with his facial expressions. Enough of it, Vivek tries to sound funny calling it by different names - Mani, Sombu, bulb - Not funny any more.

Kola Kolaya Mundhirika film review

It is indeed a pity that a genius like Crazy Mohan is so under utilized in our industry, especially when we keep churning out disaster after disaster in the name of crappy masala entertainers. If we leave out his ventures with Kamal Hassan, it can be either a case of not able to use him to potential or it can either be a case where you don’t have the actors or team to do justice to his writing. The latest outing “ Kola Kolaya Mundhrika” somehow tries to almost strike a balance and make full utilization of him.

KKM is an out and out crazy ride. You have a Motif ( lost diamonds..some twenty years back.. hidden in a antique chair ( you have 4 similar chairs though diamond is in only one)) + petty thieves after it + comical villain with insanely dumb side kicks + outrageously silly police officer who is after them for a completely different purpose+ ..+..+…the list goes on :).

Its like bread and butter for Crazy Mohan or should I say Pongal Vadai with Filter coffee !! His word play is at its best and provides us several hilarious stretches. Be it the initial sequences at the Punjabi wedding or the instance where they talk about the “Mullu” that leads Luv dada’s death. Writing is at its wittiest best. These are just instances and there are many more and like any of his previous movies, am sure to find some 10 more jokes on a repeated viewing. With him the jokes keep increasing :).

On the flip side, like some of his previous movies here and there he does touches the borderlines of stage drama at times. You also have a completely ridiculous climax chase sequence which was pretty amateur to my liking. These are a few nitpickings here and there, nothing more. But the biggest let down are the songs which had no impact of what so ever.

The actors do a competent job. Karthik Kumar who looks like he is struggling a bit with his comic timing grows on you as the movie progress where Shikha who makes her debut is at completely ease. MS Bhaskar provides with some of the best moments in the movie while Jayaram pulls of his Closseau act competently. You have loads of other actors and veterans ranging from Radha Ravi to Anand Raj who all does justice to their roles. To top it all you have a cameo from the M(oh)an himself !!

Watch it if you like hilarious zany comedies. Watch it for its laugh out loud moments. Watch it for Crazy Mohan!! Do I have to say more :)

Kanagavel Kaaka Film

Karan tries to tread a different path in director Kavin Bala’s debut Kanagavel Kaakka. It is not a completely different theme as such, but the premises make it somewhat distinct to other films that we have seen that border on the same theme.

Kanagavel Kaakka takes a look at the judiciary of our country; how easy it is to find loopholes in the law and escape punishment. So, what is the solution to this? That someone has to take it upon himself to deliver the right judgment when the court of law is not able to do so. How he sets flawed judgments right is the story of Kanagavel Kaakka.

Karan plays the unassuming and ordinary peon in court, the guy who stands behind the judge practically playing no part in the whole process of the trial, just being there as a mute spectator. But, he is not the kind of peon that everyone thinks he is. He is in fact a lawyer who was forced by fate to take up the garb of a peon. The reasons for that are told; Karan’s father was a judge and naturally had to take a few tough decisions in his career and delivered judgments that irked a few bad men. He had to pay the price for it through his family and Karan who was witness to all the arson decides to be a source of support to his father than erecting a career of his own.

Now, as a peon standing behind the judge he is able to see right through the fake witnesses and hollow arguments of the other lawyers in court (because of his education as a lawyer). And, when a criminal walked off free he chased them down and delivered justice of his own kind. How long does he continue doing this, does the law wake up or does his struggle end up as a minor movement that never had any impact at all?

Kanagavel Kaakka does attract with its theme - that of one man against the system, which we never go tired of. But, there is a feeling that a director could have brought in a bit more suspense and intelligence to the proceedings. Right from the word go, there is no sense of excitement or whodunit in the movie. It is pretty plain and predictable in spite of the theme’s potential to be suspenseful as well as exciting. The other factor missing sorely from Kanagavel Kaakka is the intelligence. For all his law degree and shrewd eye to detect the criminal, Karan does not seem to plot his acts well enough. All the acts of punishments that he delivers seem too simple and straightforward. Depicting a little bit of planning and in depth thought behind this would have added more credibility to the movie. But, Kanagavel Kakka does impress basically because it has got a theme of universal appeal. Only, the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

Karan has played a role that is quite apart from the ones he has been seen in over the recent past. There is a sense of restraint and underplay which is good and suits the character well. Others in the cast live up to their experience like Kota Sreenivasa Rao, Sampath and Raj Kapoor. Haripriya as the heroine hasn’t got much to do except in the songs.

Technically, there is nothing much in the movie that garners attention. All departments are just adequate. Music by Vijay Anthony is passable, but not catchy and there seems to be one song too many for a film of this kind.

Kanagavel Kaakka has got an interesting subject. But, lack of suspense and intelligence in the proceedings are major drawbacks. A tighter and more focused screenplay was definitely called for.

Verdict: Legal drama: lots of loopholes!

Hello people just thought of sharing few incidents which happened in the last few days of college life.It was the heaven, which we didn't realize when people joined there and spent half of the time cursing it and degrading it for most of the time.We are just few months aways for getting the incentive of degrading it.Wonder what ? am talking about the Degree which are going to get.

My college is not one such dazzling one like others with all those hype and other things which would make all the young people to dream of joining it.It is simple but its unique in its own way.My college is almost like a religious institution which gives education for the deserving candidates.Unlike other college which would bent down to the power and other influences which would make them bent down.I guess this enough about my college.

Now let me talk about the people whom i have met in the due course of my studies..As it is well known that there are different people with oscillating character from different castes and economically very well capable ones.The one and only big drawback what our college doesn't have is girls..May be thats the major plus point as well as the minus one.There are no such hot and dazzling beauties who make us go gaga over them.For sure any biologically well balanced person would miss them.We did.But like all the married person says we are very happy that there is no one to disturb us.Those shouts and those pains which made them bore and all those stories which we had heard.Made us feel happy.

We also had that extra space where we can share anything..Ya anything which we want...Even all those who got influenced with alcohol and tobacco were enjoying themselves without any disturbance.There are lots more to share about..You can catch them up in the upcoming articles..Let me wrap it up by saying WE MISS U... Namitha is all set to take up the baddie’s role in Ilaignan. The glamour girl was suggested for the role by none other than the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M Karunanidhi. When the director of Ilaignan, Suresh Krishna and hero Pa. Vijay were scouting for a suitable face, they seemed to have agreed upon Namitha.
When the role was discussed with the actress, she immediately agreed to don the greasepaint. The shooting of Ilaignan is currently on and the lady is expected to join the team soon.

Parvathy Omanakuttan to make her kollywood Debut

Yet another former Miss India is entering into Kollywood. Parvathy Omanakuttan could not win the Miss World Crown, but she decided to follow the precedents set by many of her predecessors like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sushmitha Sen.

Parvathy’s first Tamil film will be Umamaheshwaram. The movie is being directed by Nitin Ramakrishna and produced by Rupesh Kumar.

This film’s pooja took place at the AVM Studios in Chennai recently.

Umamaheshwaram deals with the atrocities that the women face in the society and Parvathy plays a classical dancer in it.
